I hunched over, about to fall to the floor. "I'm in a lot of pain. I can barely lift my arm. Something is wrong." The substitute radiation oncologist said, "You need your plastic surgeon. You'll have to call them." I was a football being handed off to someone else. One person needs care. Another--or a team of others--are there to give it. What happens when they don’t?

In 2021 Stephanie S. Abbott became a cancer patient. She went from subject matter expert and healthcare executive to patient—and acquired a fresh outlook while navigating the full spectrum of care. From depths of frustration and vulnerability to the solace and encouragement of compassionate human connections, she sought glimmers in the shadows. It was in the darkness she realized she wasn’t being buried; she was being planted for something greater.

“Chemotherapy, surgeries, radiation: cancer tried to kill me. At times I felt buried. I began to grow when I realized that instead, I’d been planted. I suffered through the journey and found grace in the wounds—a new version of me I’d never known.”

In this book:

• Discover the Sparkle in the Darkness—your focus guides your reality

• Gain Wisdom from Life’s Lessons: shift perspectives, grow stronger. You’re not being buried—you’re being planted for a brighter future!

• 100+ Expert Insights to reframe the healthcare experience allowing humanity to occur: enhance patient and employee experiences

WHAT MY
READERS SAY

"Unvarnished. Courageous. Insightful. Inspiring. These words are top of mind for me as CEO of a large health system as I consider Stephanie S. Abbott’s new book, Buried or Planted. Research shows that the majority of patients see healthcare as confusing, cumbersome, complicated, and often inaccessible. Stephanie shares her very personal cancer journey, as she was fighting for her life and for her dignity, through the lens of both a patient and a seasoned healthcare leader. Stephanie puts a spotlight on the sizeable gaps and downfalls as well as opportunities in the U.S. healthcare system. She challenges those of us with influence to come together to change, improve, and better serve humanity. As Stephanie shared with me, “I have survived. Now I want to thrive and make a difference for others.”
